I’m fresh back from the first OuiShare Summit in Paris – that has been held in the wonderful coworking space “La Mutinerie” – where I had the amazing opportunity to gave a talk entitled “Towards a cooperative, small scale, local, p2p production Future” in which I really tried to connect the dots over a bunch of topics, amazing authors and also writings that I’ve done on my own, especially the latest three on the blog.

OuiShare initiative was born in Paris during 2010 mostly thanks to the energy and sociablity of Antonin Leonard following the global wave of interest around two seminal books that have been published those days: Rachel Botsman’s and Roo Rogers’ “What’s mine is yours” and Lisa Gansky’s “The Mesh”.

For those not really familiar, Collaborative Consumption concept is about a new way of consuming goods, considering access over ownership: sharing what you own and don’t use 100% of the time with other members of your community helps reducing the overall consumption and is really some special idea. Many great ideas embody collaborative consumption principles: among the most well known is ride or car sharing, couchsurfing or room renting, tool lending, and many many more.

Collaborative Consuption has a really huge merit: having put the idea of co-ownership and access under the spotlight, triggering interest for the collaborative, peer to peer models stlll very marginal at that time probably except for what p2p paradigm achieved in the music industry, making music actually free to circulate beyond gates and copyright holders.

Ouishare therefore, was born with “collaborative consumption” at the very heart: amazingly enough – since it’s really easy to get stuck with your root ideas – the team noticed that cooperation and collaboration represent something that is well beyond being just a different consumption pattern, and so they decided to invite me for giving my talk.

The paradigm of cooperation is, indeed, one – probably the only one – credible alternative that our global society should tackle in pursuit of a future of some kind.

That’s more ore less why, at the summit as in general on the internet, two – not necessarily conflicting, but surely different – souls coexist.

The first one is, with no doubt, legitimate but a little bit superficial (and listen, there’s absolutely no moral judgment in my statement) and looks usually for short-term business opportunities, that often lay on a dangerous path to kinda coll-washing (a little bit like we saw with greenwashing).

On the other hand, we have those looking for a more deeper investigation that goes beyond the search of new business models, and aims to understand the real implications that cooperative models adopted by worldwide hacking, DIY and p2p communities have on things like Freedom, economy, education, politics and other key aspects of our lifes.

When researching on these topics you can’t really close your eyes and pretend not to see the deep sense of individual liberation and empowerment that comes from this way of cooperatively tackling the problems that our society lives today.

“Together we know everything, together we own everything”

The change that we expect therefore, is not only social, governmental or of the business structures: it is instead a cultural change, a mindset revolution that relates much more to the individual and her pursuit of autonomy .

The lifestyles we are accustomed to, our own society, the very same trajectories that sociey has made available so far to us as western citizens (education-job search-competition-consumption) are obviously and soundly, falling apart along with the debt bubble that has held this system together for decades, hiding the quite obvious flawns in thinking of society as a collection of individuals competing rather than cooperating.

This separation between our personal goals and the general public ones was mostly the result of industrial, capital intensive production that has always, since the early days of the industrial revolution, sought for the massification of products and centralization.

The search for scale economies and profit accumulation created, quite obviously, a perverse mechanism of negative externalities generation at the expense of the community.

Now that the tools of production democratizes, and that the scale is no longer necessary as it once was, we are on the verge of a potentially huge change: what the Economist called recently “the third industrial revolution“ or “the manufacturing garage revolution”, as Joe Justice told me during an interview a few days ago on meedabyte.

That revolution though, mind you, is just at its inception, and will likely cover the entirety of the production of goods, from food, energy, creativity to everyday objects.

Regaining an independent (DIY) and creative (make a job, don’t take a job)  approach to life means freeing oneself, and one’s mind from the stereotypes the consumer society created ad-hoc, and prepare ourselves to face and build a more equitable and participatory future.

To me, honestly, is really difficult to think all this as yet another business model.

Verso un Futuro di produzione cooperativa, su piccola scala, locale e p2p – Parigi, OuiShare Summit

Sono fresco di ritorno dal primo Ouishare Summit a Parigi, dove ho avuto l’opportunità incredibile di tenere un tal dal titolo “Verso un Futuro di produzione cooperativa, su piccola scala, locale e p2p”, in cui ho cercato di unire i puntini rispetto a un insieme  di argomenti e autori veramente sorprendenti e scritti che ho fatto per conto mio, in particolare gli ultimi tre dipsonibili sul blog.

Per chi non è molto familiare col concetto, il Consumo Collaborativo riguarda un nuovo modo di vedere i beni di consumo, considerando più importante l’accesso della proprietà: condividere ciò che si possiede (e magari non si utilizza al 100%) con gli altri membri della comunità contribuisce a ridurre globalmente i consumi globali ed è davvero un’idea speciale. Molte grandi idee incarnano i principi del consumo collaborativo: tra le più note il ride/car sharing, il couchsurfing or lo room renting, e il prestito di strumenti di lavoro (avete mai pensato a quanto tempo effettivamente usate un trapano nella vita? Solo qualche ora), e molti molti altri.

Il Consumo Collaborativo ha un merito davvero enorme: l’aver messo l’idea della co-ownership e dell’accesso sotto i riflettori, innescando interesse per la collaborazione, e per i modelli peer to peer (dove conta il contatto da persona a persona) che a quei tempi erano ancora molto marginali, salvo quanto il paradigma p2p aveva già fatto nel settore della musica rendendola davvero libera di circolare al di là di distributori, etichette e titolari del copyright.

L’iniziativa Ouishare, come molte altre, è quindi nata con il “consumo collaborativo” nel cuore: abbastanza sorprendentemente però – perché è davvero facile rimanere bloccati con le nostre idee d’origine quando si tenta qualcosa di nuovo – il team ha notato che la cooperazione e la collaborazione rappresentano qualcosa che è ben al di là dell’essere un semplice modello diverso di consumo (e dunque mi hanno invitato a parlarne).

Il paradigma della cooperazione è, infatti, una – probabilmente l’unica – alternativa credibile che la nostra società globale ha per perseguire un futuro di qualche tipo.

Questo è il motivo del perché su questi temi (la collaborazione e la cooperazione) al vertice, come in generale su internet, due – non necessariamente in conflitto, ma sicuramente diverse – anime convivono.

La prima anima, senza dubbio legittima, è a mio parere un po’ superficiale (non c’è assolutamente alcun giudizio morale nella mia dichiarazione) di solito ha uno sguardo a breve termine sulle opportunità di business, e spesso si trova su un percorso pericoloso di coll-washing (inteso un po’ come quello abbiamo visto con il green-washing).

Dall’altra parte, abbiamo chi cerca di mettere in atto una indagine più profonda che vada oltre la ricerca di un nuovi modelli di business, e miri a comprendere le reali implicazioni che il modello cooperativo adottato dalla comunità hacking, Do It Yourself e P2P di tutto il mondo ha su cose come la Libertà, l’economia, la formazione, la politica e altri aspetti fondamentali della nostra vita.

Quando fai veramente ricerca su questo tema non puoi chiudere gli occhi e fingere di non vedere il senso profondo di liberazione individuale e “empowerment” che deriva da questo modo di affrontare i problemi in modo cooperativo che sta prendendo piede nella società connessa che viviamo oggi.

“Insieme conosciamo ogni cosa, insieme possediamo ogni cosa”

Il cambiamento che ci aspettiamo, pertanto, non è solo sociale, governativo o delle strutture di business: è invece un cambiamento culturale, una rivoluzione di mentalità che riguarda molto di più l’individuo e la sua ricerca di autonomia – nella cooperazione – e libertà personale.

Gli stili di vita a cui siamo abituati, la nostra società, le traiettorie stesse che questa ci ha messo a disposizione finora – come cittadini occidentali – ovvero la sequenza istruzione-ricerca di lavoro-competizione-consumo, stanno ovviamente e profondamente, cadendo a pezzi. Questo insieme con la bolla del debito che ha tenuto insieme per decenni il sistema, nascondendo il difetto di base, abbastanza evidente, nel modo di pensare la società come un insieme di individui in competizione piuttosto che cooperanti per la ricerca di un bene comune.

Questa separazione tra i nostri obiettivi personali e quelli pubblici è stata per lo più il risultato della produzione industrializzata, legata a doppio filo con i capitali, che ha sempre, fin dai primi giorni della rivoluzione industriale, ricercato la massificazione dei prodotti e la centralizzazione.

La ricerca delle economie di scala e l’accumulo dei profitti ha, ovviamente, generato un meccanismo perverso di generazione di esternalità negative a scapito della comunità (inquinamento, costi sociali, disoccupazione, etc…)

Ora che si democratizzano gli strumenti di produzione e che la grande scala non è più così necessaria, siamo sull’orlo di un cambiamento potenzialmente enorme – ciò che l’Economist ha recentemente chiamato “La terza rivoluzione industriale” – o “la rivoluzione manifatturiera dei garage“, come Joe Justice l’ha chiamata durante un’intervista che ho pubblicato qualche giorno fa su meedabyte: cambiamento che, badate bene, è solo all’inizio e probabilmente riguarderà la totalità della produzione di merci dal cibo all’energia, dalla creatività agli oggetti di uso quotidiano.

Riconquistare un’approccio indipendente (DIY) e creativo (“non cercare un lavoro, fai un lavoro”), significa liberare se stessi e la propria mente dagli stereotipi creati ad hoc dalla società dei consumi, e prepararsi ad affrontare e costruire una alternativa più equa e partecipativa per il futuro.

Per me, onestamente, è davvero difficile pensare a tutto questo solo come all’ennesimo modello di business.
